Reconstructing winter climate anomalies in the Euro-Atlantic sector using circulation patterns

چکیده

Abstract. The efficacy of Euro-Atlantic circulation regimes for estimating wintertime climate anomalies (precipitation and surface temperature) over Europe is assessed. A comparison seasonal reconstructions from two different regime frameworks (cluster analysis the low-level zonal flow, traditional blocking indices) presented contrasted with using North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. are quantitatively evaluated correlations coefficient efficiency, accounting misfit in phase amplitude. skill various classifications reconstructing depends on variable region interest. jet found to capture more spatial structure precipitation than NAO, framework showing generally better relative indices. temperature have lower those precipitation, best results obtained by NAO high-latitude southern Europe. All methods underestimate magnitude due large variability within each classification pattern.

The nonlinear association between ENSO and the Euro-Atlantic winter sea level pressure

A nonlinear projection of the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) onto the Northern Hemisphere winter sea level pressure (SLP) anomalies by neural networks (NN) was performed to investigate the nonlinear association between ENSO and the Euro-Atlantic winter climate. While the linear impact of ENSO on the Euro-Atlantic winter SLP is weak, the NN projection reveals statistic...

Winter to winter recurrence of atmospheric circulation anomalies over East Asia and its impact on winter surface air temperature anomalies

The persistence of atmospheric circulation anomalies over East Asia shows a winter to winter recurrence (WTWR) phenomenon. Seasonal variations in sea level pressure anomalies and surface wind anomalies display significantly different characteristics between WTWR and non-WTWR years. The WTWR years are characterized by the recurrence of both a strong (weak) anomalous Siberian High and an East Asi...

Investigating the Impact of Reemerging Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies on the Winter Atmospheric Circulation over the North Atlantic

Extratropical SSTs can be influenced by the “reemergence mechanism,” whereby thermal anomalies in the deep winter mixed layer persist at depth through summer and are then reentrained into the mixed layer in the following winter. The impact of reemergence in the North Atlantic Ocean (NAO) upon the climate system is investigated using an atmospheric general circulation model coupled to a mixed la...

Characterizing the European sub - Arctic winter climate since 1500 using ice , temperature , and atmospheric circulation time

This study describes winter climate during the last 500 y for the greater Baltic Sea region through an examination of well-documented time series of ice cover, sea level pressure, and winter surface air temperatures. These time series have been the focus of previous studies, but here their covariation over different time scales is analyzed based on two modern descriptive statistical techniques,...
